ALEXEY STADLER – cello

“Alexey Stadler played with (…) the kind of tactile, honeyed tone capable of bringing listeners to their knees.” — The Times

One of the finest cellists of his generation and winner of the TONALi Grand Prix in Hamburg, Alexey Stadler caused a sensation with his BBC Proms debut, performing Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1 under the baton of Vasily Petrenko. Other acclaimed debuts include appearances with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and Tugan Sokhiev, the San Francisco Symphony and Vladimir Ashkenazy, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra conducted by Michael Sanderling.

Highlights of his 2025/26 season include performances with the Orchestra della Toscana and the Rheinische Philharmonie, as well as appearances at the Beethoven-Haus Bonn and NFM Wrocław. The season also marks his residency with the Thüringer Philharmonie and his first full-season collaboration with DIALOGI e.V., encompassing symphonic and chamber concerts, school concerts, workshops, masterclasses, performances in remote locations and projects dedicated to the culture of remembrance.

A keen chamber musician, Alexey Stadler has performed with Janine Jansen, Vadim Repin, Christian Tetzlaff, Igor Levit, Alice Sara Ott, Lukáš Vondráček, the Ébène Quartet and the Szymanowski Quartet. His festival appearances include the Menuhin Festival Gstaad, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, Heidelberger Frühling and Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Born into a family of musicians, he began playing the cello at the age of four. He studied with Alexey Lazko at the Rimsky-Korsakov College of Music in St. Petersburg, and later with Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt in Weimar, where he taught chamber music between 2020 and 2023. He is currently Professor of Cello at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg and Artistic Advisor at the Krzyżowa-Music Festival.

Alexey Stadler performs on a David Tecchler cello dating from 1715.
