Born in 1963 in Timișoara, where he graduated from the Ion Vidu Music High School in the Percussion class of Prof. Viorica Siminescu, Doru Roman graduated in 1986 from the Gheorghe Dima Conservatory in Cluj-Napoca (class of Maestro Grigore Pop). In the same year, he became a member of the Romanian Opera Orchestra in Timișoara. Since 1990, he has been a member and since the fall of 2007, concert-soloist of the Banatul Philharmonic Orchestra.
Doru Roman is a Percussion Professor at the Faculty of Music of the Western University in Timișoara, having a doctorate in music. He is a member of the International Europa Symphony Orchestra (Vienna), the Metropolitan Orchestra in Bucharest, the Percussion Ensemble from Cluj-Napoca and the Old Dixeland Jazz Band in Timișoara. He is also the coordinator of the Percutissimo Ensemble of the Faculty of Music in Timișoara, the JimboDrums Ensemble and a member of the Contraste Trio, as well as the Gentis Trio.
He was awarded numerous prizes: First Prize at the national percussion competitions (1978-1982, 1986), the Romanian Critics’ Prize (1985), the Special Prize at the Sibiu Jazz Festival (1986), the Pro Cultura Timisienses Prize and the UCMR Prize (2008), the Pro Juventute Award (2012) and the Diploma of Excellence (2016).
As soloist, Doru Roman collaborated with the following orchestras: George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra (Bucharest), Banatul Philharmonic Orchestra (Timișoara), National Radio Orchestra (Bucharest), Radio Chamber Orchestra (Bucharest), Transilvania Philharmonic Orchestra (Cluj-Napoca).
He participated in numerous international festivals, such as: Contemporary Music Festival (Darmstadt, 1991), S.I.M.C. Festival (Lausanne – 1992, 1996, 2004), Contemporary Music Festival (Huddersfield, 1993), Musicarama Festival (Hong-Kong, 1995), George Enescu International Festival (1998, 2003, 2007, 2011, 2013, 2015), Agde Musica (France, 2000), Tage Der Neuen Musik (Bamberg, 2001), Zeit fur Neue Musik (Beyreuth, 2001), Oldenburger Kammermusik Festival (2003), Belfort International University Music Festival (France, 2003), Gesellschaft fur Neue Musik e.V. (Mannheim, 2004), Komponistinnen und Ihr Werk (Kassel, 2004), George Enescu Festival (Heldelberg and Mannheim – 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2015), Timișoara Music Festival, Toamna Clujeană, Craiova Music Festival, International New Music Week, Entrance, Daily Music Days, Ernen (Switzerland), Stockholm New Music, etc.
He also participated in six editions of the Zwischen-Zeiten Symposium at the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg Institute for Advanced Study – Delmenhorst and was a jury member of the Giornate della Percussione International Percussion Competition (Fermo, 2012). Doru Roman gave recitals in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Italy, Bulgaria, Austria, Hungary, France, Spain, China, Colombia, Denmark, England, Germany, Poland and Taiwan.
He made several solo DVDs with works by Mauricio Kagel, Doina Rotaru, Jean Ballisat, Maia Ciobanu, Andre Jolivet, Dan Dediu, Adrian Enescu, Lothar von Knorr, Violeta Dinesc etc., as well as DVDs and CDs together with members of the chamber music groups he is part of.
