The symphonic concert Harmonies of Nature, conducted by Rumon Gamba, features two works by Ralph Vaughan Williams and one of Ludwig van Beethoven’s most beloved symphonies.
The evening opens with Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Greensleeves, a delicately lyrical work built on the famous traditional English melody.
Next, Vaughan Williams’ Suite for Viola and Small Orchestra showcases soloist Timothy Ridout, one of the leading violists of his generation.
The second half of the concert is dedicated to Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 in F major, op. 68, “Pastoral,” a masterpiece of the classical symphonic repertoire. Inspired by nature and the composer’s experiences within it, the symphony offers a succession of soundscapes evoking tranquility, joy, and the power of natural elements.
