The symphonic concert Variations of Time, conducted by Radu Popa, opens with the Chaconne from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Partita No. 2 for Violin, BWV 1004, presented in an orchestral version arranged by Saito Hideo. Considered one of the most profound creations of the solo violin repertoire, the work conveys a vast and meditative dimension while retaining the expressive power of the original.
Next, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme for Cello and Orchestra, op. 33, brings the evening’s soloist, Jan Sekaci, to the forefront. The work combines the elegance of the Classical style with the Romantic lyricism characteristic of the composer, offering the cello the opportunity to display its flexibility and expressiveness.
The final part of the concert is dedicated to Benjamin Britten’s Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Henry Purcell, op. 34, also known as The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. This iconic work highlights the colors and possibilities of each orchestral section in a clear, educational, and spectacular construction.
